ASTM AISI 316 stainless steel (UNS S31600) is one of the most widely used austenitic stainless steels. Due to the addition of Molybdenum (Mo), SS316 has a great improvement in corrosion resistance and certain properties. 316L stainless steel (UNS S31603) is the low carbon version of AISI 316.
This must be done with great care to avoid a reprecipitation of chromium carbides that adversely affect the corrosion resistance properties of SS AISI 316. 1.4435 / AISI 316 L is an austenitic chromium nickel molybdenum stainless steel with low carbon content. 1.4435 is a higher alloyed variant of 1.4404 and is used as a medical grade due to its excellent resistance of all corrosions.
General Properties. Alloy 316/316L is molybdenum bearing austenitic stainless steel. The higher nickel and molybdenum content in this grade allows it to demonstrate better overall corrosion resistant properties than 304, especially with regard to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.
In regards to heat, 316L shows better resistance to creep, stress to rupture and overall strength than other stainless steel grades. Many of the same work practices effective on type 316 may also be employed on 316L, including weldability and work hardening through cold working.

The grade is used for a wide range of industrial applications where steels of types ASTM 304/304L have insufficient corrosion resistance. Round bar is supplied in solution annealed and peel turned condition.
When choosing between 304 and 316, corrosion resistance is the #1 consideration, followed by the need for strength and durability found in 316, or higher formability found in 304. The higher cost of 316 and 316L stainless steel is well worth it when the application requires their specific properties.
